MIT Acupuncture, LLC.
Facial Acupuncture can address many issues appearing on the face by working both locally to improve circulation, increase collagen production, and improve skin tone and at a systemic level to correct system inbalances the cause behind the facial issue. We create individualized support by starting with a comprehensive consultation to understand exactly what issues each patient hopes to correct. Treatments are recommended on a bi-weekly basis for a 6-week period (10 treatments in total); this specific timing has been demonstrated to be the most effective in increasing collagen and elastin production, reducing wrinkles, and achieving lasting results.
What Can Facial Acupuncture Help with?
Wrinkles and Fine Lines
A recent clinical trial demonstrated that treatment with facial acupuncture resulted in decreased wrinkle formation and inhibited degradation of collagen fibers (Yoon-Jung, 2015). It works by inserting needles directly into the dermis layer of the skin, about 3mm deep. This is the layer where collagen and elastin are produced; collagen and elastin make up the fibrous matrix that provides our skin with its firmness, lift, and elasticity. Production of these fibers declines with age leading to sagging skin, fine lines, and wrinkles. By inserting the needles into this layer, the needles create microtraumas, stimulating increased blood flow to the dermis as well as stimulating the production of collagen and elastin.
Recent dark circles around the eyes usually develop as a result of poor circulation, facial acupuncture improves circulation and plumps areas with thinning skin. The loss of collagen in the skin around the eyes magnifies the appearance of dark circles, facial acupuncture works to correct this by increasing collagen production in this area.
The treatment includes points not just in the face, but in the body too, in order to treat the constitutional cause behind any facial issues. This helps to improve fluid metabolism throughout the entire body and is directly reflected by reduced puffiness in the face.
Effects of aging
The same study that showed acupuncture decreased wrinkles also concluded that it has “anti-photoaging effects on UVB-induced skin damage by maintenance of collagen density” and suggested acupuncture as a treatment for protection against skin damage from aging (Yoon-Jung, 2015). In the same way that it boosts collagen and elastin production to reduce wrinkles, the increased firmness and elasticity helps to correct the various effects of aging.
Redness, acne, and rosacea all share the common symptom of inflammation. Facial acupuncture helps to decrease inflammation and regulate circulation both in the face and throughout the body and can be a helpful treatment for mild acne and rosacea.
Firmness and Definition
Facial acupuncture can improve definition by toning the muscles of the neck and face that are under utilized and relieving tension in those that are overused. The increase in collagen and elastin production also helps to create a more defined jawline by improving skin tone and firmness.
Improvement in skin elasticity and texture
Also as a result of increased collagen and elastin production, facial acupuncture can improve the overall texture and elasticity of the skin creating a more even and youthful appearance.
